Object lessons

A woman hitchhiker travelled along with a trucker for six months before deciding to leave. Instead, he started beating her and holding her captive. She finally got assistance by scrawling a plea for help, with the truck number, on a bathroom wall.

When sherriffs used a GPS system to track the truck down at a rest stop, the woman was found dazed, with bruises, internal injuries, and hairline fractures all over.

According to the trucking company, which noted that the driver and the woman had signed a form authorizing her as a rider in the truck back in January, "We don't want to pass judgment until the facts are out, but it sounds like a lover's spat rather than a kidnapping to me."

As if that makes it all better.

Quoth jenn ...

Nothing screams 'I want to be your next victim' quite like a woman hitchhiker.

Which does in no way justify his behavior, but woman, please!

I need to send this to my sister, who likes to play with high-risk behaviors... Her latest? She is moving to Korea. Why? Her boyfriend wants her to.

Quoth *** Dave ...

It's unfashionable -- and often unfair -- to "blame the victim." My doing something really stupid and irresponsible and self-endangering does not morally justify someone else hurting me.

On the other hand, blame is not a zero-sum game, our tort laws not withstanding. She is to blame for having made at least one really stupid-ass decision. He is to blame for being a violent son-of-a-bitch who hopefully rots in a cell for a few dozen years. Neither person's blame reduces the other's.

I am, though, glad she's safe, and he's caught.
