We suffer at our house from a severe lack of broadband.

DSL (via Qworst) is not available to the house.

Cable modem service (via AT&T) is not available to the house.

Broadcast broadband (via Sprint) is blocked by trees.

Satellite is, presumably, available, but the price is exhorbitant, and since we don’t live in the Middle of Nowhere, I choose not to go that route.

So today I get a mail ad from AT&T Broadband. With High-Speed Cable Internet Service, You’ll Love Using the Internet Again. Could it be?

I mean, after all, they know what addresses it’s available to. I know, because I can go to the web site, put in my address, and it gives me a thumbs up or (always, in the past) a thumbs down.

So they wouldn’t burn an extra Presorted Standard US Postage to send a notice to someone they know can’t use their service, right? I mean, they have my address, printed, right there, right? They wouldn’t tease me like that, right?

Go to the web site. Key in my address.

Bastards.

  1. It’s still worth the call, though. The data on the site may not be up to date. (I know that makes zero sense from every perspective, but that’s how it is.)

  2. I know you’ve probably already looked into a cable modem, but don’t they have Adelphia up your way? They’ve been massively opening up their service areas, I have a couple of friends who work for them and that’s about all they do, is hook up new folks.

  3. We’re in AT&T Broadband area, not Adelphia, alas. And while they go through their acquisition process, I don’t expect to see any large capital expansion projects, dagnabbit.

  4. Well, at Jake’s suggestion, I called AT&T. And, yes, they confirmed it wasn’t available in our area.

    Yet.

According to the nice gent’s computer, though, new fiber is scheduled for installation probably in 2-3 months, no more than 6 months out. At which time some cable channels will get moved around … and at which time, broadband data access will be available.

I’d rather have DSL, for a variety of reasons, but a cable modem would beat being poked in the eye with a sharp stick, that’s for sure.
