Hey, Kids! Comics!

[N.B. This review was started but never finished or published at the time.]

Been a while ...

Review code format: writing (3-1, faboo to mediocre), art (3-1), suitability for jumping on as a new reader (3-1), suitability for hooking a non-comics reader (3-1), and eagerly waiting the collected TBP (Y/N).

The Punisher #1 (Marvel MAX) [2/2/3/2/N]
Just as Bendis is taking Alias out of the MAX imprint, Ennis is putting Punisher on it. It is, of course, a perfect fit -- massive violence, coupled with the sense it's just as well we don't think too much about how the book fits with the rest of the MU. Larosa and Palmer on art are uneven at times, but it combines both clean lines and gritty action nicely. Ennis has been doing this title for a while, but he continues to deftly weave between bloody and hilarious, hitting you with the one just when you expected to get the other.

Way of the Rat #21 (CrossGen) [2/2/2/2/Y]
More of the same generally entertaining pseudo-Chinese adventure. Jeff Johnson's art is missed, but not too badly. Boon, Po Po, and company are trapped in a lost treasure cave, complete with monstrous guardian, while back home another adventurer with a similar name is peeved over cases of mistaken identity. Next issue looks to be an all-Po Po extravaganza, which should be fun.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang #1 (CrossGen) [2/2/3/2/Y]
This new series is a nice retro Bond-like spy tale, with a few twists -- including the conceit that British super-spy Charles Basildon is actually a role passed on from agent to agent as each one retires (or dies). The current office-holder is just as big an SOB as you'd expect the "real" Bond to be, and retro hilarity -- and gunfire -- ensues. This series could easily lose its way, but so far, quite good.

Teen Titans #7 (DC) [3/2/3/1/Y]
