I am going to say very little about this book, largely because there are many people who have not yet read it, and therefore would be disappointed to learn that Voldemort is actually Harry’s — oh, wait, I shouldn’t tell about that.  Well, learning that Mrs Weasley and Snape have actually — drat, don’t want to spoil that scene, either.  Ah — there’s the hot three-way with —

Oh, never mind.

Suffice it to say that I felt utterly and completely satisfied, by the time I finished the book, with both the time and the money invested in the series.  I could quibble over some of the huge expository passages, or some of the deus ex magical-doubletalk that resolved some of the conflicts.  But enough of the various and sundry character arcs reached reasonable and fulfilling conclusions to make me feel like Rowling really did know what the heck she was doing by the time all was said and done.

Good show.

By the way, for those who wanted a more detailed epilogue, Rowling has given out MANY HUGE SPOILERS in an interview that should really, truly, only be read when you’ve finished the book.  Really.  And there’s more SPOILERS here, as well as promises by Rowling that she’ll be putting her notes into encyclopediac form, for those who cannot learn enough of the details — like STILL MORE SPOILERS about the deaths that did (and didn’t) happen in the series.

But all that aside — yeah, I liked it.  Makes me want to reread the series — though, not quite yet. 🙂

Okay, they don’t really talk like that here.  Flew into Manchester, NH, caught the hotel shuttle to the faaaaaabulous Crowne Plaza Nashua (“Southern N.H.’s Premier Property!”), checked in, wandered out for a nummy lasagna, and back to the hotel.  Free Internet, a gym downstairs (drats, forgot my gym togs), etc.

Impression of New Hampshire:  Lots of trees, crumbly granite outrcoppings, lots of wood in the construction, an annoying dearth of sidewalks along major thoroughfares.

Next three days are back-to-back-to-back meetings, with all meals heavily organized.  Ah, well.

Okay, that’s maybe a bit of an exaggeration for a headline.  But, honestly, “What has Brown done for you?” is too often “Failed to deliver a package but claimed that they tried anyway.”  It’s happened to me more than once,  and Kottke’s description of his Harry Potter delivery sounded waaaaay too familiar.

Maybe I’m lying about being home or maybe the person trying to deliver the package made an honest mistake, but it’s curious that a delivery attempt could have been made when the package was not even “OUT FOR DELIVERY”. Here’s what I think happened. I think UPS’s network was overwhelmed by Amazon’s Potter-volume in some parts of the country and they had no way to deliver all those packages. (The forums for the book at Amazon and Google Blog Search are full of similar complaints from others…warning, spoilers! UPS even offloaded some of the volume to the USPS for “last-mile” delivery.) So, UPS just marked all of those packages they had no intention of delivering as “oops, we missed you, you must have been out”.

It’s not that I think UPS is lazy or even inefficient.  I just think they are not as efficient and no-sparrow-shall-fall as they claim to be — and when you make claims to the level of operative excellence that UPS does, you’d better be scrupulously honest and accurate about it.

Amazon ended up giving Kottke his guaranteed refund.  Kudos, as they could have pointed at UPS’s delivery log and claimed it said he wasn’t home.

This could actually be a fascinating branding project, but the selection of defense department/ministry logos given in this article is a bit too limited (and a remarkable number of former British colonies still use a variation of the UK’s MoD logo).

Japan’s looks like a toy manufacturer — but Ireland’s rocks.

The Girlguides in the UK — their equivalent of Girl Scouts — have done a survey of what merit badge skills they should be teaching.

Guides are demanding sessions on how to practise safe sex and assemble flat-pack furniture to ready themselves for life in the 21st century.

They also want instruction on how to manage debts and reduce the size of their carbon footprint as they prepare to enter the adult world.

The demands emerged in a survey of more than 1,000 Guides by Girlguiding UK, which is striving to keep itself relevant to the lives of young women. A spokeswoman said that the movement would act on the findings and make sure that the appeal for more information on sex and money was met.

In the poll, senior Guides, who are aged over 16, said that managing money was the most important skill to master as they contemplated leaving the family home. “Practising safe sex” was placed fourth, with “assembling flat-pack furniture” eighth. Younger Guides, aged from 10 to 15, valued more traditional skills. Top of their list was “cooking a healthy meal” and “pitching a tent”, although “standing up to boys” came fourth.

The youngest Guides, aged under 10, said that they wanted to know how to surf the web safely and how to cross the road.

Haven’t heard of a similar Girl Scouts survey, though I’m sure they do that sort of thing.

Friday:  Worked in the morning.  Later in the afternoon was able to relax a scosh, mostly prepping for the Blogathon.

Went and picked up Kitten from Franklin Friends amidst utter and profound downpours.  I was sorry when I left I didn’t take the Subaru instead of the van, but was glad for the clearance later on.  I mean … yow.  Serious street flooding.   Serious “maybe I shoud pull over” rain on the windshield.  And more with the flooding.  Yow.

In the evening, Jackie came over with Brian.  Steaks on the Bar-b.  Good wine.  Yummy dessert.  Nice conversation.  Good times.

Saturday:  Blogathon!

Sunday:  Blogathon, until 7 a.m.  Sleeeeeeeeep until 2:30p.  Hang out in a sort of sleepy stupor the rest of the afternoon.  Haircut from Margie and a nice shower.  Dinner and Dr. Who and relaxation.

Monday, et al.:  Off on a business trip for most of the week in … New Hampshire!

Kicks.  Ass.

Yes, I’m a week behind (or more, in some quarters), but this is the best episode from Series 3 to date.  We got action.  We got humor.  We got menace.  We got drama. We got great makeup.  We got cat nuns (and more).  We got lots of backstory service.  We got the Doctor really angry.  We got the Doctor really sad.  We got the Doctor spilling his guts.  We got …

Very. Nice. Episode.

I watched it, but Margie hasn’t.  Noodge her to do so whilst I’m off on business, otherwise I’ll have to do so when I get back.  Though that would only mean I have to watch it again, and … well, that wouldn’t be that bad a thing.

Thanks, Doyce

In case you missed my “live” performance, you can check out my Blogathon posts most easily by one of the following methods:

  1. Well, if you use an RSS feed, they’re all sitting out there.  If you’re using the Atom feed, it includes pictures.  Ooooh …
  2. You can click on the “Blogathon” category archive link in the sidebar.
  3. You can do a search for “BT07” — all posts during the ‘Thon have that in the subject line.

Enjoy.

Some time in the next week or so, the Blogathon people will be sending out e-mail reminders to you about your pledge, with a link to the ERD giving page.  That’s it.  Nothing is being automatically deducted, no actual bill from the ERD being send — heck, the ERD will never know that you pledged, and if you never send them (or anyone) anything, nobody will ever know.

Except, of course, you.  🙂

If you want to get a hop on the process, or look at your (many) options, you can go here.  There are various simple donation funds, pages with corporations that do matching gifts, and lots of stuff under “Gifts for Life” (things like giving a goat, etc.) — you can even buy “Bishops Blend” coffee.

The direct donation page is here, and it’s easy-peasy to use. It also includes a snail-mail address you can use if you prefer to send money by Post rather than over the Net (there’s even a Phone option).

Thanks again for your help and support.

This sort of thing doesn’t just happen.  I have a lot of folks who’ve helped.

First off, thanks to the folks who organized the Blogathon.  You give structure to this effort, which helps make it happen.  Because otherwise it wouldn’t.

Thanks to the folk who monitor — in my Khouria Jen.  Knowing you were watching helped.

Thanks, too, the the folks who commented the past 24 hours:  Les, DOF, Amanda, Doyce, Mom, Margie, De, Ktbuffy, Avo, Lee, Kevin, Steve, and Ginger.  This is not an effort easily done without any feedback.

Thanks, again and more, for those folks who actually made this a worthwhile effort by pledging to the ERD (you should, in the next few days, get an e-mail reminding you of your pledge and where to go to make the donation):  Steve, Mom & Dad, Mary, “Anonymous,” Solonor, Ktbuffy, Doyce, Randy, DOF, Lee, and Amanda and Marn.  At $520 $540, this was the most I’ve raised in a Blogathon, and I very much appreciate it.

(For the record, the overall Blogathon attracted 361 blogs and a total of $117,097.86 in pledges to various causes.)

Thanks to the creators of the comics that give me so much joy, not to mention fodder for commentary.

Thanks to Mom & Dad for encouraging reading and tolerating my comic book habit (esp. for that Giant-Sized X-Men #1 we picked up off the spinner rack at the Grand Canyon many moons ago …)..

Thanks to Jim & Ginger for helping us put together the new office to serve as Blogathon Central here.  Again, it made life a lot easier both in terms of removing distractions and convenience to the material.

Thanks to Katherine for being good for me.

And most of all, and always, many thanks to Margie.  When I offer up 24 hours of my life to an effort like this, perforce it means a lot of extra hours for her, too, plus all the food shopping and solicitude and all that good stuff.  Margie’s been a brick in this, and her “but of course” willingness to support me made this not just possible, but doable.  Love you, honey.

And to all a good night!

Runaways #27 (Marvel) w. Joss Whedon; a. Michael Ryan
Whedon’s run on the title has been solid but not extraordinary.  Throwing them back in time is an interesting move, especially given that we encounter some 1907 metahuman street urchins (the Yellow Kid — I love it) and some other time travelers that are unlikely to be pleased by all this.

Outsiders #49 (DC) w. Judd Winick; a. Matthew Clark, Ron Randall
CheckMate double-crosses, torture, border violations, and more intrigue than you can shake a stick at — which ends with setting up a new Batman and the Outsiders.  Interesting.

Thunderbolts #115 (Marvel) w. Warren Ellis; a. Mike Deodato, Jr
This continues to be the “Dark Underbelly of the Registration Act” group, run by Norman “Green Goblin” Osborne and populated by both well-meaning heroes and some real scum.  Good damned stuff.

About an hour and a half to the end of the ‘Thon.  I am currently sitting at (woot!) 12 pledges totaling (woot!!) $520 for the ERD.  If you’re just waking up and seeing I’m stll here, why not reward my vague coherence and pledge more, more, more!  Woot!

And in honor of that, I’m going to be even more brief in my reviews.  Or less structured.  Or something.

Green Lantern #21 (DC) w. Geoff Johns; a. Ivan Reis
I’m tired of all the screwing around with the GL universe.  The art is pretty, but the whole Sinestro Corps thing has been a real turn-off.

Hawkgirl #66 (DC) w. Walter Simonson; a. Renato Arlem
Finally resolves the whole Hath-Set / eternal rebirth cycle thing for the Hawks.  Kind of ballsy, better than dwelling on it every other issue.  So now Kendra doesn’t have mystic mojo pushing her toward Carter.  Looks to be the end of the title.

Teen Titans #49 (DC) w. Adam Beechen; a. Al Barrioneuvo
Clumsy art, stilted plotting and dialog, and an Amazon Attacks! tie-in.  Bleah.  Hopefully #50 will be something special.

Jack of Fables #12 (DC Vertigo) w. Sturges & Willingham; a. Akins & Pepoy.
The series has never gelled for me as well as Fables.  This ep falls in-between serious adventures. Meh.

Justice League of America #11 (DC) w. Meltzer; a. Ha
Red Arrow and Vixen trapped under a fallen building.  Decent character stuff.

Ms. Marvel #17 (Marvel) w. Brian Reed; a. Aaron Lopresti
The end of an overly-long and complex AIM/MODOK arc.  Thank heavens.  For all they were pushing this as a keystone title, they seem to have given up.

Stormwatch: Post Human Division #9 (Wildstorm) w. Christos Gage; a. Andy Smith
A failed assassination attempt, lots of internal paranoia, and a really stupid character-warping solution to the mystery.  Ugh.

Shadowpact #15 (DC) w. Bill Willingham; a. Tom Derenick
While Blue Devil is in Hell trying to free his family, Zauriel (a horribly underused Ellis-era JLA character) joins the team.  Not his fault Doc Gotham’s destroying the city.
