Terminal Schadenfreude

Say what you will about the massive cost overruns, problematic baggage system, and multiple delayed openings at Denver International Airport -- it seems that having delays in that triple threat may have been the best part of the deal, given the massively cost overrun Heathrow Terminal 5 and it's, well, problematic baggage system.

British Airways PLC plans to cancel some short-haul flights at Heathrow Airport's new Terminal 5 through the rest of the current work week following severe problems with the £4.3 billion ($8.5 billion) facility's baggage-handling systems, a spokesman said.

The U.K. airline planned to scrap 50 of the 392 flights scheduled to arrive or depart T5 Tuesday and Wednesday, while 32 of the 396 flights scheduled for Thursday are set to be canceled, the spokesman said. On Friday, 34 flights of the total 394 planned are set to be pulled, he said.

BA has already had to cancel about 300 flights since the new terminal opened March 27. The airline now has a backlog of 19,000 mislaid bags, of which 6,000 are in the process of being returned to their owners.

DIA ("Delayed Indefinitely Airport") took forever to open, but baggage got handled (semi-manually) when it did.
