So the Helpful Help Desk Guy (not a direct hire by me, but a direct hire by a direct hire, once upon a time, so I take partial credit) found a spare notebook, same model. Swap over the 2Gb of RAM, swap over the hard disk, voila, a working notebook.

But I still might keep the Big Monitor.
