Next up in karate ...

Heian Godan!

Katherine has this down amazingly well already. I'm impressed.

It's not easy testing out of Green

Had my karate testing tonight aiming toward my purple belt (which Katherine got two months ago). Not terribly happy with my performance --nothing grossly wrong, just not very good. Probably okay -- but I won't know for certain until Tuesday ...

Activities en route to somewhere

All sorts of things going on, though few of them are concluding as yet.

In karate, I'm getting ready for testing for my green belt. That should be a week from Thursday.

On the front yard, we're awaiting approval from the HOA (no problems expected), and still need to make some design decisions. One problem is that we're late enough in the season that some of the tree varieties we want are not available in mature models; we may hold off on some of that until the Spring, though I'd hate to wait for all of it. Estimated start time is now some time next week, not necessarily Monday.

Attended a Girl Scouts organizing meeting for Kitten the other evening. They're short on 3rd graders, so the local unit poobah is going to determine the best course, probably hearing back in a week or two.

I finally have all my visa application info for my India trip, and will be submitting that today. Yeesh, what a pain. That should be back in a couple of weeks, in more than enough time for the trip itself.

There's some shaking up going on in my department right now -- not bad stuff, but more-work stuff. There are also some uncertainties about the overall budget this year; we'll see how the new CIO does.  I expect more on this in a week or so.

Oh, and there's an election in a couple of months. Though there's not much I do there besides vote (and blather on here).

Wish there was some closure to be had around here. :-)

Multi-classing

Katherine has decided that karate is not enough, and she wants to take an archery class. So we've signed up for something in November to see how she likes it.

If she takes up fencing, too, we're all in trouble.

Practicing Living Green

Green Belt, that is.

Between (a) having been out of pocket (and out of class) for a couple of weeks at the top of the month, and (b) being out of town on business next week, and (c) off on vacation for the following two, the fact that next week is testing week in our karate class means that ...

... well, I'm not sure I'm ready, and there's not an easy way to reschedule.

So I'll stick with the green belt until testing in September.

As for Katherine, I told her that she didn't need to skip the test just because I was. I'm not sure she's ready, either, but I leave that to her and Sensei to make the call.

Arm update

After my sports injury (I still get a mild kick out of writing those words), I've been popping Advil and trying to take it easy on that arm. Though odd movements that twist or extend that elbow still hurt some (often unexpectedly -- "Hey, I didn't realize doing that meant moving my arm like this"), it's feeling much better. I even went to karate last night, did some similar exercises (carefully) and managed to only feel significant pain once (when I forgot to do it carefully).

Question is -- will I be able to do the yard work this weekend that I really need to do? Though it would make a dandy excuse ...

Ow

It is with some measure of pride that I report I have sustained a Sports Injury.

Yes, that is sort of akin to saying I was struck by a meteor, or was pickpocketed aboard the Prince of Monaco's yacht, or am suffering from a post-abduction alien probing. I am not, in short, someone one would expect would ever suffer from a Sports Injury.

But, I fear, I hyperextended by left elbow doing a snap punch in karate.

I am very proud of myself. And, also, in pain.

It's not easy testing for Green

Katherine and I both had our tests for Green Belt (6th Kyu) on Thursday.

klh-greenbelt-test-1 dch-greenbelt-test-1

No idea whether one or the other or both of us will make it (and, if not, that just means we work harder toward the next test). But it was cool doing it -- and cool prepping for it together.

Gratz, Kitten!

Congrats to Katherine who won 1st place in kumite (sparring) for her age division at the tournament Saturday. She also did well in kata, winning her first two contests before being knocked out by the person who eventually won 1st.

Very proud. It's funny -- I don't want her to think that my approval, love, or even pride in her is contingent on her winning -- but that she did win does make me want to laud even more praise her.

Wish I could have been there, but ...
