But, honestly, can you imagine a current comic making this joke? Or a comics page editor letting it through?

Cue the next strip: Calvin is visited by the Feds, is taken away for psych eval, and then is expelled from school when the administration is told of the "threat."
Or, a strip with Oliver Wendell Jones berating Calvin asking why he called a librarian for a book instead of Googling on the Internet. Calvin replies that Carnivore doesn't work on books.
Serious point here: As we have tried to secure high tech terrorism the bad guys have gone low tech. We haven't shifted our strategy, though.
Yes, but hi-tech security is sexy! It makes for great news articles! It's cool! It's shiny!
Low tech stuff is for security guards. It's dull. It's boring. It's (gasp) work! And since it's something that should already be being done, it's embarrassing, too.
I remember a Calvin & Hobbes where he's pretending to be a hard-boiled private-eye. As the strip progresses he's dramatically emptying the clip on his .45 automatic. Last frame, his mother has three suction-cup darts on her forehead and he's back in his "Calvin" persona holding a toy dart gun.
Ahh, good times...
