They're a bit crazy about bikes here

A multi-levelbike park near Amsterdam Centraal. This doesn't include at least this many again parked along the canal side, etc. It's difficult to convey the depth of the Dutch love affair with bikes.

Oh, man I'd love to see that on campus. We're getting ready to build (another) multi-$M parking garage next to the one next to our beautiful building, and are building two more four blocks away, one of which is also blocking the view of (and from) another beautiful new building in which people live and work.

Yay Bikes! You may think it hard to "convey the depth of the Dutch love affair with bikes" but I think your picture does a great job. May I have your permission to share that photo with other cyclist friends of mine?

P.S. How cool that you can photo-blog while on your trip in Europe! In spite of all its problems, sometimes technology allows us to do things that were unimaginable just a few years ago. When my parents travel, they send postcards, and I often don't get the cards until after they have returned home. This is much cooler.

I am also impressed that you managed to get one of Amsterdam's many open air public urinals. :)

That picture is awesome! Ditto DOF, I would love to see that here too. I look forward to the day when I say, "Where the HELL did I park my bike!!!"

Quoth *** Dave ...

1. Yes, I have no idea how people find their bikes.

2. A lot of folks also have "in town" bikes they leave there all the time -- take the train in to town (for work) and then hop on the bike kept there and head to the office. Same thing in Leiden for my company (in some cases, the company provides the bikes). Something like this would, I would think, seriously work for a college campus. If anyone rode bikes any more.

3. DaveN, there's actually another level to this park that you can't see in this picture. It's pretty amazing. And, yes, you have permission.

4. Good spotting, BD. I was told it was called a "Turkish Urinal" (which essentially is a semi-sheltered surface to piss against, which is still better than finding a convenient wall).

Good spotting only because I managed to use several when I was there. :P I had forgotten that they were called "Turkish Urinals" though.
