Some of the bathroom signs are a bit too abstract for me. And a couple are a bit too literal. But if I gotta go right now I'd prefer the literal ones.

The advantage of the more literal ones (I do like the rope sculptures, which tends toward that end of the category) is that they are, as you say, pretty clear when you're actually looking for the door to enter.

In at least one restaurant I ate at in the Netherlands, the WC doors were (a) separated by a stairway, and (b) marked only with a small "D" and "H" nestled against the door jamb. Very trendy and chic but not very helpful.
