The awe and majesty of Mount St. Helens

Yeah, the marine layer was, um, a bit ... layered.

A fun road trip, and we saw and learned a whole bunch of stuff, but actually seeing Mount St. Helens live? Even from the as-close-as-you-can-drive Johnston Ridge Observatory?  Reply hazy, try again some other trip.

Golf? Golf!

So ... not much golf to report on over the last year. In fact, I think the last time I went out was for the parish golf tournament last July/August.

Which brings me to this year's parish golf tournament (see "not much golf to report on").

Actually, did pretty fun. Went around with some folks who I've golfed with before, playing a best ball game at the Links G.C. in Highlands Ranch (where we were last year), netting a par for the group, which was pretty good. Despite not having golfed for a year, I felt pretty good about what I did -- not too many truly awful shots, and enough cases where mine was the best ball that I felt like I was pulling my weight.

Despite the fact that it was supposed to get to the high 90s or 100 today, a nice breeze, plus late afternoon light overcast, kept it from being too ghastly hot.

Overall, a nice way to spend the afternoon. Many thanks to Margie for making it possible. :-)

And the rain-rain-rain came down-down-down ...

Started raining last night, and was still at it this morning -- drizzly at the house, downpouring at the foothills, then lightening up enough to make the sweep on C470 from Morris up to I70 look and feel like a jaunt in England (except for the side to drive on). It was really gorgeous.

Those vistas are one thing I'll miss in the move downtown (not surprisingly, I'm keeping a list to blog about). One more day ...

The Fog

Driving in this morning, I noticed a bit of mist wisping off of some of the agricultural ponds along C470 -- and more over by Chatsfield Dam, which is a regular location for tule fog sorts of phenomena. Fog is one of the weather conditions I miss from loving closer to a coast, and it's interesting to see the mist "lurking in the hollows" and slowly giving way in the early morning light ...

Until I rounded the corner from C470 onto I-70 and ran into a freaking wall of it. High and thick and sun-blotting and vision-reducing (of the "wow, I almost missed my exit because I can only see about 50 yards and can't see the buildings just off the freeway" kind).

It'll burn off quickly, no doubt, but ... an unexpected bit of weather for the morning.

Spring sprung

Rain down at the house, light snow up at the office, and the foothills in the misty light all limned with black and white like a giant electronic microscope scan.

While the cold may cause some issues, I think everyone's gardens will enjoy the good soak.

Ah, Spring in Colorado ...

Today has varied between blustery, sunny, overcast, clement, snowing (a few flakes, but distinct) and beaming. And now ...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN DENVER HAS ISSUED A FREEZE WARNING...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT TO 8 AM MDT SUNDAY.

LOW TEMPERATURES TONIGHT ACROSS NORTHEASTERN COLORADO WILL MAINLY BE IN THE UPPER 20S TO LOWER 30S. MANY LOCATIONS WILL SEE TEMPERATURES SLIGHTLY BELOW FREEZING FOR A FEW HOURS.

A FREEZE WARNING MEANS SUB-FREEZING TEMPERATURES ARE IMMINENT OR HIGHLY LIKELY. THESE CONDITIONS WILL KILL CROPS AND OTHER SENSITIVE OUTDOOR VEGETATION. IF POSSIBLE...MOVE PLANTS INDOORS TO PROTECT THEM FROM THE COLD. OTHERWISE COVER THEM WITH NEWSPAPERS OR BLANKETS.

Sounds like it's time to move the new plants up closer to the house and cover them up ...

Water, water, everywhere?

So we're in the middle of a last-gasp winter storm (though Denver's actually gotten snow all the way into June in the past), and we've had so much mountain snowpack this winter that lots of folks are worried about flooding.

And ... water restrictions just kicked in for the City of Denver.

Actually, this will affect us, too, since our water district gets its water from Denver.

Not that it actually bothers me -- whether we need it or not, those water restrictions are reasonable in the face of ever-tightening water supplies in the future. But it was just sort of a funny coincidence ...
