This first slide shows a council meeting of the Hand of Gaea. This is a radical environmentalist organization, which has committed Class 3 acts of terrorism over the past five years. This included the destruction of the Balsynykol Dam in 2002, 975 dead; the burning of the Tsing-Shao chip fabrication plant in 2000, 373 dead; and the 1999 bombing of the Toreador in Goa, which killed 135. If you count express actions that resulted in 25-100 dead, you could add another 3,000 or so fatalities. That doesn't count the downstream impact of their actions; there are estimates that the GMO seed grain aboard the Toreador could have averted another 150,000 deaths from starvation in India over the succeeding four years.
Hand of Gaea professes to protect the planet from the encroachment of human dangers and destruction. Certain elements within the organization are known to have gone beyond demanding that technology and development be drastically curtailed, and have seriously proposed finding ways to substantially reduce the human population, either through starvation or through more drastic means. While largely neo-Luddite in its goals, the Hand of Gaea is not beyond using high technology for its purposes. The organization is heavily bankrolled by certain wealthy contributors, as well as through more mundane theft and criminal enterprises as a "means to a good end."
While you are likely to find a number of the higher management within the organization to be much more interested in proclaiming their willingness to die for the cause than actually do it, there are plenty of fanatics within the Hand of Gaia who are willing to sacrifice themselves -- and anyone else in their way -- to meet their goals. At least two of the fourteen you see here were involved in, and killed by, the dam destruction. These are fanatics of the highest order, ladies and gentlemen.
