Caen — pronounced “kahn,” where the “ah” (as in “father”) is nasalized, as in blanc.
(Caen is not to be confused with Cannes, the location of the film festival.)
Caen is a port in Normandy, southwest of Le Havre. A Huguenot stronghold in the 16th and 17th centuries, it is the burial place of William the Conqueror. Population: 112,872.
The University of Caen was (re)founded in 1894; the original was founded in 1432, but was “dissolved” during the French Revolution.
Noteables (for these purposes) include Marie Fluery and Simon Fracier.
