How’s this for a couple of Kitten sentences?

“Green Lantern! His ring run out of power! And those things coming straight at him!”

Okay, a couple of grammatical bits could use work. But those are pretty sophisticated sentences nonetheless, not to mention understanding at 3-1/2 that Green Lantern’s ring runs out of power, and that’s what’s happening during the JL episode.

Well, I’m impressed. If a bit biased.

  1. Yup, that’s the one (and a fun trio of eps it is, too). It’s just amazing how she pops out with this evidence that not only is she watching the pretty pictures, she understands what’s happening and wants to share that understanding with others. Tres cool.

  2. But have you been watching the new eps Saturday nights?

Solomon Grundy was treated like a DC Hulk (leaping huge distances and shouting “Grundy smash!,” and even referring to “stupid magician and bird-nose!, although in this cae they were Dr. Fate and Hawkgirl).

And a new Secret Society, consisting of some big guns (Gorilla Grodd, Parasite, and Sinestro) among others (Killer Frost, Shade, Giganta).

I watch 2-1/2 hours of new programming in a typical week. Justice League is 40% of that! Always well-written and fun.

  3. Saturday nights not work so good for me, usually. And our VCRing is not terribly convenient, either. So I’ll wait for S2 to make it to the prime-time runs.

FWIW, Grundy has often been a Hulk-alike, even in the DC comics. Indeed, the variations in how he behaved made for an interesting Starman arc.

  4. I’m not very familiar with Grundy. Doesn’t he predate the Hulk?

But you have to admit, the “Bird-nose” and “magician” bits were aimed squarely at Marvel (specifically The Defenders) fans!

  5. Hmmmmm.

SG’s first appearance was in All-American Comics #61, October 1944. That certainly predates the Hulk’s ’64(?)ish debut. But, then, over that period he’s still behaved in a variety of ways (as has the Hulk for that matter).

I’m certainly willing to agree that the “magician and bird-nose” bits were from someone who recalls those Defenders days

  6. And, having now watched the episode in question, it’s even more obvious that’s the case. All that was missing was a DC version of the Silver Surfer (none comes immediately to mind).

For all that, it was a pretty good ep (the first half, at least), despite being a big “All the heroes fight each other” setup. Hawkgirl’s dialog, among other things, was priceless.

  7. The Black Racer, maybe? I believe he was a Kirby Kreation.

    Ah, yes. So he was!

Not exactly analogous to SS, but you know… Surfing, skiing… It’s all the same to me.

  8. I had the same thought. But the BR was — well, not much of a character. A grim (if mildly — odd) avatar of death, quite removed from the Tortured Shakesperean SS.
