New York, NY April 23, 2007 – SCI FI Channel and BBC Worldwide Americas today announced a major acquisition deal for the U.S. premiere of the third season of Doctor Who. The series will debut on SCI FI in July 2007, kicking off with the Doctor Who Christmas Special: The Runaway Bride, guest-starring award-winning comedy actress Catherine Tate.

In season three, David Tennant returns to his role as the mysterious, time-traveling Doctor. American audiences will meet the Doctor’s brand-new sidekick, Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman), in the first official episode of the season, “Smith and Jones.”

[…] Executive Producer and Lead Writer Russell T Davies says, “We were delighted and honored by the second series’ success, and we can promise new thrills, new laughs and some terrifying new aliens. The Doctor and Martha are destined to meet William Shakespeare, blood-sucking alien Plasmavores, The Judoon a clan of galactic stormtroopers and a sinister Dalek plot in 1930s New York.”

I’m slightly disappointed to see the Daleks return, if only because each time it weakens the impact of the previous “Final, Ultimate, Tragic, Blood-Soaked, Tear-Stained Defeat of the Daleks” episode.  Not that I’d dream of missing it for a moment!

  1. I honestly never thought for a moment they would completely remove the Daleks from the series. They are The Doctor’s #1 villain after all.

Even more so than The Master, for whom there are rumors swirling around.

  2. I love blogs! Came here to link to your post about 6 Apart’s ‘no follow’ plug in and found this conversation about Dr Who…

I’m writing from Cardiff, Wales where its filmed (along with the spin off show TorchWood – have you seen that yet?) and this Saturday was the episode where the Daleks reappear. They’ve left us with a cliff hanger til next week – I shan’t say how or what, dont want to spoil it for anyone – but suffice to say that I think you’ll forgive their return. I was nearly as scared as I used to be as a child watching from behind the sofa!

    Warmest

PS – LOVE the photo ‘timeline’ down the left there.

  3. Thanks, Claire. I need to update the top pic — that shot’s over two years old now, remarkably.

My wife and I have visited Cardiff a couple of times in the past, which brings a giggle whenever we see a familiar landmark in Doctor Who (Torchwood hasn’t made it to the US — yet).

My concern with the Daleks isn’t that they aren’t being well-used or that the episodes themselves aren’t fantastic, but that by bringing them back each series, their reappearance may lead to some element of “Huh, the finally-destroyed-at-great-cost Daleks are back. Wonder how they’ll be finally-destroyed-at-great-cost this time.”

On the other hand, I’m not the writer-producer of a hit TV show, so what do I know?
