I like havling a laptop computer for the ability to take it places I couldn't access a normal computer from.
I like it for the convenience of not having to maintain parallel systems at work and at home.
But most of all I like it for those three second power blips in the office during the hot days of the summer when all the desktop machines reboot but my laptop doesn't. Yah.

Why aren't the desktops on UPSs? It seems like a small investment with a potentially big payoff to me.
Actually, even a small UPS isn't inexpensive. But, you're right, it's what they *should* do. The cost of losing even 15-20 minutes of unsaved work far exceeds the UPS costs.
