So in an attempt to address my somewhat elevated blood pressure, I’m trying to cut back on my coffee consumption — or, rather, my caffeine consumption.  I’ve been something like a five cup a day man (plus a couple of sodas at lunch), but, honestly, that’s because I enjoying having something to sip at the office.

So now I’m drinking herbal tea after my first cup of the day.  I was making use of the stash in the break room cabinets, but now I’ve brought in a couple of boxes from home for variety.  We’ll see how that goes.

A bit less of the java jive is probably okay with me.  And I’m not going to be religious about it — if I’m at a restaurant and there’s coffee being served, I’ll drink it (and caf, not decaf — generally don’t care for the latter as much).

  1. Be forewarned: tomorrow night you’re going to get a headache the likes of which you have never felt, in your eyes and the back of your neck. Neiter aspirin nor any other headache remedy will help. How long it lasts will depend on how saturated your brain is with caffeine. Only hair of the dog will alleviate it.

The first time I detoxed the headache lasted about four days. And yet, I got back on the stuff.

  2. This isn’t a new switch — I started it last week. So far, no withdrawal symptoms. I’ve always been inconsistent in my caffeine intake anyway — lots some days, very little others, without hte classic headache.

    Mercifully. 🙂

  3. Formerly Dave sounds like My step-sister when she was Pregnant and jonesing for coffee and me being unemployed at the time and not drinking any caffine except for Friday gaming nights, telling her not having coffee every day was no problem for me.

Never taunt a Pregnant woman jonesing over caffine…it does not end well.

  4. Er, if you’re looking for herbal teas to try, “red tea” or rooibos is an anti-oxidant tea with no caffeine and a pleasant, slightly sweet flavor.

It’s probably a good time for me to start taking my stash of red tea to work with me and cut down on caffeine intake again, too. I’m having a lot of trouble sleeping and of course blood pressure is also a concern.

Good luck and hope you avoid the headache… for me, I have to wean myself by mixing leaded with unleaded.

  5. I was drinking Celestial Seasons Orange tea from the cabinet. I brought some Lemon Zinger and some Good Earth Herbal (yum).

Never have had a problem with going to sleep from caffeine, or with (as I said) the headache. Knock on wood …

  6. On the other hand…my blood pressure is such that I take drugs to elevate it. It has gotten so low that I’m often tired, can no longer donate blood, etc. So I’ll just drink any coffee that you skip over…
