You think you have it rough... I'm just now working through 2nd season Galactica. Fortunately I can deal with spoilers reasonably well; I get wrapped up enough that I am still shocked when something big happens. A good thing, because well-meaning people have already blabbed large parts of the 3d season to me.
Oh, so you haven't gotten to the point where fleet finds a cache of flying motorcycles and starts to use them to scout out new worlds? That part rocks ...
Re: Aldrin.
Didn't help that Kennedy decided to go for spectacle instead of meat. Direct to the Moon (beat the Russkies!) instead of building a space station first and gearing/learning up to do useful stuff in space. We could just barely go direct and didn't have any leftover capacity in the landers (or the budget) to do much beyond plant flags. Did it! Next --- Go again! Again! More rocks! A few experiments coming and going!
Then the USSR broke up.
No surprise people lost interest.
