A long-standing Bay Area Girl Scout tradition had to be cancelled because of security concerns.
The nation’s code orange terrorism alert bears the blame for the cancellation of the Girl Scouts annual walk across the Golden Gate Bridge.
More than 4,000 Girl Scouts were to have taken part in the trek over the famous span on Saturday. But bridge officials revoked the Scouts’ permit to hold the mass walk because the nation is at an orange security alert and the bridge has long been viewed by security experts as a prime target for would-be terrorists.
Yeah. I mean, don’t they take Demolitions and Holy War merit badge training or something? Or maybe I’m thinking about the Boy Scouts. Well, in either case, you can’t be too careful …

I could see the outrage now if they had allowed it and something bad HAD happened, though.
Mob: “We are in an elevated state of emergency, right?”
Gov’t: “Yeah.”
Mob: “And the Golden Gate Bridge has long been recognized as a potential target, right?”
Gov’t: “Yeah.”
Mob: “And you let a bunch of Girl Scouts march across it anyway?”
Gov’t: “Ummm…Yeah.”
Mob: “Where’s my gun?”
Gov’t: “Awwwww crap.”
Of course, they JUST lowered it to yellow a little bit ago.
Oh, I know, and all that. It’s still amusing.
Well, I don’t know. I’m a Girl Guide leader (it’s girl guides in Australia, rather than Girl Scouts) and all my friends were rather worried when my guides decided to built a catapult a few years ago. Something about the idea of 13 year old girls armed with serious seige weaponry disturbed them. I can’t think why.
And now I’m working with younger girls (6-10 years old) and they’re started to freak even me out. Last camp we went on they spent most of the time plotting to take over the world with a giant laser. And when we went on a trip to the zoo the other weekend the talk was all of evil scientist plans to create a race of mutant spiders with telepathic powers (all called Jeffery for reasons that I never managed to grasp).
Sometimes it’s worth being terrified of small children.
Heh.
In my brother’s Boy Scout troop, there was a group that wanted to be know as the pyro patrol – with good reason.
Well, true. Thinking back to my Boy Scout days, there were a number of kids who probably shouldn’t be trusted around sensitive (or flammable) areas.
I have two siblings going on a band trip to New York this summer.
My mother says she’s praying for New York.
